The smell of Christmas can be found in a Lunenburg County balsam fir tree. Its lush foliage, rich balsam fir aroma, and superior needle retention make it the tree of choice during the Yule tide season, establishing Nova Scotia as the Christmas Tree Capital of the World.
But before the winter harvest of balsam fir trees begins, local growers are focused on another bountiful crop – the wild blueberries that permeate our fields between August and late September. Wild blueberries represent Nova Scotia’s largest fruit crop, with growers producing enough wild blueberries to provide every Nova Scotian with 40 pounds of fruit per year.
We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the holidays than by showcasing two of Nova Scotia’s most prolific home-grown products. Our Balsam Blue is brewed with the tips of local balsam fir trees and Nova Scotia wild blueberries to create a light, sparkling ale that combines the bright festive flavour of fruit with a touch of tangy balsam.
